SYNOPSIS

When the vivacious and outlandish Cee Cee Bloom and the beautiful, privileged Bertie White, two personalities vastly different from one another, meet each other as children on the beach in Atlantic City in the early 1950s, a special bond of friendship forms. Their journey takes them from pen pals to roommates to romantic rivals, but both changed forever by the bonds of true friendship. 

But as life-changing and ever-enduring as friendship is, will this special bond between Cee Cee and Bertie be able to withstand the sturm und drang of their teenage years, and the tumultuousness of adulthood?

CREATIVE TEAM

Following Iris Rainer Dart’s iconic 1985 novel of the same name, and its film version featuring Bette Midler, Iris Rainer Dart and Thom Thomas have adapted the tale into a magnificent stage production, featuring music by Mike Stoller, and lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart.

Beaches: a New Musical’s Broadway debut will be headed up by a world-renowned creative team, with directors Lonny Price (Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd, Company, Candide, Passion, Camelot, 110 in the Shade) and Matt Cowart (Company, Master Harold… and the Boys, Sinatra: Voice for a Century, Walking With Ghosts) at the helm. 

The creative team also includes the talents of choreographer Jennifer Rias, scenic designer James Noone, costume designer Tracy Christensen, lighting designer Ken Billington, sound designer Kai Harada, projection designer David Bengali, orchestrator Charlie Rosen, and musical supervisor Joseph Thalken.

The cast for Beaches: a New Musical’s Broadway premiere is a tour de force. With their soaring voices, impassioned stagecraft, and perfect portrayals of the character personalities, this production promises to be well worth a standing ovation or six. 

Audiences can look forward to experiencing Kelli Barrett (Gypsy, Rock of Ages, Anastasia, Wicked, Dr. Zhivago, My Fair Lady) as Bertie, Jessica Vosk (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Chess, Wicked, Hell’s Kitchen) as Cee Cee, Ben Jacoby as Michael Barron, Brent Thiessen as John Perry, Samantha Schwartz as Little Cee Cee, and Zeya Grace as Little Bertie.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Beaches: A New Musical was conceived and had its world premiere in 2014 at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, after which it moved to Chicago. Due to book writer Thom Thomas passing away in 2015, further progress on the production was halted. 

In 2024, the production was revisited and refashioned with new music by Mike Stoller and a revised book by Iris Rainer Dart. The production opened in 2024 at the Theatre Calgary, and is slated to open on Broadway this season for its premiere. 

To answer one of the biggest questions there might be: yes, the Grammy Award-winning song Wind Beneath My Wings as popularized by Bette Midler for the musical’s 1988 film counterpart, is contained in Beaches: A New Musical.

The iconic Majestic Theatre, situated at 245 West 44th Street in the Theatre District of Midtown Manhattan, New York City, is one of Broadway’s most adored theatres. Here you can expect the best of the best in live entertainment all year around! 

The landmark Majestic Theatre, with its spectacular Spanish style architecture with golden brick, terracotta, and stone, and auditorium featuring Adam-style detailing and an expansive plaster dome, as designed by Herbert J. Krapp, has been home to many iconic large-scale productions, including premieres of Carousel, South Pacific, Camelot, and The Wiz, along with The Phantom Of The Opera, where it gained its reputation for the longest-running production in Broadway history.
